ATC-1000 TCP/IP to RS232 Review

The ATC-1000 TCP/IP to RS232 adapter is the subject of this article's review. Although it is sometimes referred to as ATC-1000 throughout the article, we are actually talking about TCP/IP to RS232 adapter. You can read about the adapter's technical specifics, how to connect it with a modem, and how it is compatible with Ozeki services. The ATC-1000 review that follows is helpful for those looking to purchase one or in need of a solution, to convert a serial modem to a TCP/IP modem.

What is an ATC-1000 TCP/IP to RS232

An ATC-1000 is an adapter for modems that only support a Serial port, but have to be deployed away from the gateway server and require a TCP/IP connection. With this device, you can send TCP/IP signals through the Internet, or an Intranet, and the device will translate it to the serial connection into the correct protocol.

Setting up an ATC-1000

The device can be configured from a browser, but since it has a static IP address by default, the first connection to the device must be made using a computer in a particular IP range. The manual provides a clear explanation of this. The ATC-1000 can quickly and easily be configured to use DHCP using the web interface. The ATC-1000's PC software is a bit on the limited side. It does provide a virtual COM port driver for Windows, but because it is a regular Windows program and not a device driver or service, it is ineffective when no one is logged in. If you only intend to use the device with Ozeki SMS Server, you can skip the task of installing it. The rest of the setup is straightforward, you can set the baudrate in the ATC-1000 controls. The Telnet protocol is set to Server on port 23 so we can connect to the device from a remote computer with Ozeki SMS Server.

Personal experiences with the ATC-1000

This device underwent testing at the Ozeki testing laboratory. During testing at the Ozeki laboratory, the ATC-1000 converter's compatibility with various RS232 devices and its performance in TCP/IP network integration were assessed. The tests aimed to evaluate signal stability, data integrity, and potential latency implications. According to Ozeki's assessment, the testing results indicate that this converter performs at an average level with the tested modems.

Pros and Cons of the ATC-1000

Pros:

  1. TCP/IP to RS232 bridging for legacy device integration.
  2. Potential cost savings by extending the lifespan of RS232 equipment.
  3. Versatile application in industrial and automation settings.
  4. Can deploy modems far from server

Cons:

  1. Potential limitations in heavy usage scenarios.
  2. Compatibility concerns with certain RS232 devices or network configurations.
  3. Limited scalability for large-scale deployments due to performance considerations.
  4. Limited future-proofing as RS232 becomes less common in modern systems.

Summary

The ATC-1000 converter offers a service that can be used in several scenarios, be it distance from the original server to the modem for better signal, less overlap between modems or just futureproofing with TCP/IP, this converter can be a helpful addition to your company and offers great compatibility with Ozeki SMS server.
