What is a VP8?

The VP8 (Video Compression Format or Video Compression Specification) is a specification for encoding and decoding high definition videos as a file or bitstream. High definition videos have a higher resolution than the standard. In contrast with the h264 codec, VP8 codec is free since Google has released its open patents. VP8 is supported by Opera, Firefox and Chrome.
