What is ECHO Cancellation?

Echo cancellation is a term used in telephony to describe the process of removing echo from a voice communication in order to improve voice quality of a call. It does not only improve the quality, but the process also increases the capacity achieved through silence supression by preventing echo from travelling across a network. Echo cancellation first recognizes the original transmitted signal that re-appears in the transmitted or received signal with some delay. The recognized echo can be removed by subtracting it from the transmitted or received singal. There are two types of echo, acoustic and hybrid.

Several things can cause them, you can see 4 below:

  • Hybrid circuits
  • Delay
  • Latency
  • Packate loss
