What is IP telephony?

IP telephony is a general term used for technologies that employ the packet-switched connections of the Internet Protocol to exchange voice, fax, and other forms of information that have traditionally been carried over the dedicated circuit-switched connections of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). It is the method that ensures two-way transmission of voice over the Internet. The voice transmission is in real time or near real time.
