What is a VoIP Telephone?

VoIP (Voice over IP) technology makes it available to transform voice through the internet. This technology is used by VoIP phones to be able to make calls to any kind of SoftPhone, mobile phone or landline via internet. VoIP phones are also known as SIP Phones or SoftPhones. A VoIP phone transforms voice data into digital packets and vice versa in order to be able to make calls over IP network, while built-in signalling protocols are used to transmit calls. Voice data of standard phones is transformed into digital format, so the voice is forwarded through the internet instead of regular PSTN system.

A VoIP phone can also be a software application that is installed on the computer of the user. In this case it is called SoftPhone. It can be a Hardware device, too, that is very much like a regular phone.
