What is RTCP?

RTCP is the abbreviation for Real Time Transport Control Protocol and it is defined in RFC 3550. RTCP is used in conjunction with RTP, that stands for Real-time Transport Protocol. RTP carries the actual data, the media streams, for example audio or video, and RTCP is used to monitor transmission statistics and send control packets to participants in a call. The primary function of the RTCP is to provide feedback on the quality of service provided by RTP.

There are no encryption or authorization methods provided by RTCP, but it can be implemented with the use of SRTP (Secure Real-time Transport Protocol).
