GSM modem connections

Ozeki Phone System makes it possible to send SMS text messages through a wireless connection. For this purpose, a GSM modem is attached to the computer with a PC-to-phone data cable. This article gives more information about this connection type and how Ozeki Phone System helps you achieve your SMS messaging goals.

Introduction

Depending on the intensity of SMS traffic you have two options for sending text messages: wirelessly (GSM modem connection) or through the Internet (IP SMS connection). GSM modem connection allows you to send/receive maximum 15 000 SMS per day (the average message throughput of a GSM modem is about 6-10 message/minute). If you wish to send/receive more messages, then you have the option to connect more GSM modems to Ozeki Phone System effectively to increase capacity; or you can use IP SMS connection.

What is a GSM modem

A GSM modem is a specific modem that is used for connection to the mobile network in order to send/receive SMS messages. It comes with a SIM card (similarly to GSM phones) of a mobile service provider. The GSM modem forwards SMS messages to the mobile network using the nearest radio station over the air. A dedicated modem device or a mobile phone that is attached to the PC with RS232 data cable, USB, Bluetooth or Infrared can function as a GSM modem.

For business purposes it is recommended to use a standard GSM modem (instead of a mobile phone) and an RS232 data cable to connect the device to the PC because these options ensure the most reliable connection.

How to send/receive SMS messages with a GSM modem

The SMS messaging application (Ozeki Phone System) communicates with the GSM network using the attached GSM device. Since these external GSM devices use SIM cards, tariffs will be determined by the service provider whose SIM card is used. You can choose from various SMS plans of mobile service providers according to your needs.

Figure 1 demonstrates the SMS sending procedure effectively. The SMS message is sent from Ozeki Phone System and it is forwarded to the recipient through the GSM device over the GSM network. First, the SMS Center (SMSC) receives the text message and it delivers to the mobile phone of the recipient.

Incoming SMS messages are stored in the memory of the GSM device or the SIM card. Ozeki Phone System reads these incoming messages from the memory cells and deletes them from the GSM device in order to make room for the next ones.

Benefits of GSM modem connectivity

  • No need for Internet connection to send/receive SMS messages
  • Quick SMS messaging options from PC-to-mobile phones
  • Efficient handling of incoming messages
  • You can increase capacity by attaching more than one GSM device to the phone system

Keep in mind

Ozeki Phone System allows to send/receive SMS messages using a GSM modem connection. You can use a standard GSM modem or even a GSM mobile phone to function as a GSM device in your SMS messaging system. By selecting the most suitable SMS plan from a mobile service provider you can setup an effective and reliable SMS system with Ozeki Phone System.
